Path and Inspiration
I have always been inspired by the beauty and technical qualities of the classical Chinese ceramics particularly the porcelains of the Song and Yuan dynasties. On my retirement I thought I would try to make ceramics myself.
I had some lessons at West Dean College with Alison Sandiman, and with Sarah Miller in London and Grazyna Schweidler in Dorset.
I only use porcelain and find it difficult to produce anything that is not a Song shape – but the use of the glazes is different!
Process and Practice
I first throw porcelain clay to produce bowls in a variety of Song dynasty shapes. After firing they are then glazed in a combination of different glazes to produce, after further firing, bright, often brilliant shining colours, with unusual sometimes surprising colours and patterns.
