Path and Inspiration
Clay appeals to me for its honesty and the way it responds directly to the hand. My sculptural work explores character and personality, often through animals such as hares and dogs. Rather than aiming for perfect realism, I focus on capturing expression, movement and presence. Subtle marks, textures and firing effects all contribute to the individuality of each piece, allowing every sculpture to develop its own quiet personality.
Process and Practice
My pieces are hand built in stoneware clay, allowing each sculpture to develop its own character as the form grows. I work slowly and instinctively, shaping and refining by hand rather than the wheel. This process leaves subtle marks and textures that become part of the finished piece. Once dry, the work is carefully fired and glazed, with the robust nature of stoneware allowing the sculptures to hold both strength and detail.
