Path and Inspiration
Born in East Germany, Frauke studied electrical engineering in Dresden and spent a year at Bath University, where she first tried pottery. After two years as an engineer, she studied Studio Ceramics in Gloucestershire and later studied Ceramics & Glass in Wolverhampton, getting involved in various ceramics events and winning the student award at Art in Clay. Currently, she balances part-time teaching secondary Maths with her studio practice.
She draws inspiration from body language, movement, local landscapes and the colours of the sea and sailing.
Process and Practice
Balancing part-time teaching and studio practice is a constant challenge.
In her thrown pieces, Frauke aims to capture movement and the softness of the clay during the making process to invite a more tactile relationship with pots. The combination of her love of throwing and the figure is an ongoing investigation.
Throwing is a compromise between control and letting go that she hopes never results in the perfect pot.
