Path and Inspiration
Nearly 50 years ago I took my first evening class at Goldsmiths' College..... It wasn't enough! So 1981-3 I attended a part time teachers' course, but I am no teacher...having a tremor, which is worse when stressed.
After moving to Bournemouth, having four daughters and working in tourism and construction, keeping potting part time, I was able to make it my full time job in 2013 when we took over the Creative Gallery in Wareham.
Having sold up in 2024 I will continue to make, selling in other galleries and fairs - I just love pots.
Process and Practice
Most of my work is thrown on the wheel, using stoneware clay from Spencroft Ceramics. Once the clay has dried a bit, I turn as necessary before adding decoration, either paper resist or in relief - fish being a particular favourite.
I like to keep the glazing simple, as it's so easy to ruin a pot with the wrong glaze, so it's a dip in a bucket, with the second glaze added for my glaze on glaze pieces.
All my slips and glazes are made up from the raw materials. All pots are twice fired, second firing to 1280C in an electric Kiln.
